BJJ Positions & Flows
For a broader overview of forms across all martial arts, see the Kata & Forms hub.
Forms Overview
BJJ does not use traditional kata or forms. Instead, the art is organized around positional flows — sequences of techniques that chain together based on the opponent’s reactions. These are practiced through drilling and live rolling rather than solo performance.
Common drilling sequences
| Flow | Starting Position | Chain |
|---|---|---|
| Guard pass → side control → mount | In opponent’s guard | Pass guard, establish side control, advance to mount |
| Sweep → mount → arm bar | Guard (bottom) | Sweep opponent over, establish mount, attack arm bar |
| Back take → rear naked choke | Behind opponent | Establish hooks, sink the choke |
| Escape → guard recovery | Bottom side control | Frame, shrimp, recover guard |
