Find a Martial Arts School
Choosing the right school matters more than choosing the right art. A great instructor in any style will develop your kid better than a mediocre instructor in the "perfect" style.
What to look for
| Green Flag | What It Means |
| Qualified instructor with verifiable credentials | Can name their teacher, organization, and rank |
| Clean, safe training area | Padded floors for grappling arts, good ventilation, first aid kit visible |
| Character development emphasis | Talks about respect, discipline, and effort — not just winning |
| Free trial class | Any confident school lets you try before committing |
| No long-term contracts required | Month-to-month or short-term options available |
| Sparring with control | Students are controlled and safe during partner work |
Red flags
| Red Flag | What It Means |
| Guaranteed black belt in X months | Belts should be earned, not purchased on a timeline |
| Excessive testing fees | $50–100+ per test, frequent mandatory tests = money grab |
| No sparring or resistance training | Forms-only schools don't build real ability |
| Aggressive, intimidating culture | Martial arts should build confidence, not fear |
| Long mandatory contracts | Good schools don't need to lock you in |
| Kids with black belts under age 10 | A 7-year-old black belt means the standards are too low |
