Judo Belt Progression

Judo has one of the slowest and most rigorous belt progressions in martial arts. This is intentional — belts are earned through demonstrated skill, not paid for through testing fees.

WhiteBeginning. Learning breakfalls, basic throws, and mat etiquette.
Yellow6–12 months. Basic throws, holds, and escapes.
OrangeHip throws, foot sweeps, and introductory groundwork.
GreenCombination throws, randori competence, tournament participation.
BlueAdvanced throws, sacrifice techniques, strong groundwork.
BrownNear-complete technical knowledge. Teaching junior students.
Black (Shodan)4–6 years. Serious student. Now the real study of judo begins.
