Find a School

Choosing the right school (dojo, dojang, academy, gym) is the single most important decision. The instructor matters more than the style.

What to Look For

Qualified InstructorVerifiable credentials, lineage you can trace, and experience teaching kids — not just competing.
Safe EnvironmentClean mats, proper equipment, controlled sparring, and a culture of mutual respect.
Character DevelopmentThe school should teach discipline, respect, and self-control — not aggression.
No Pressure ContractsGood schools let you try classes before committing. Be wary of long-term contracts and excessive fees for testing.

Red Flags

Guaranteed Black BeltsNo legitimate school guarantees a black belt in a specific timeframe. Black belts are earned, not purchased.
Excessive Testing FeesBelt tests should have modest fees (if any). Schools that charge hundreds per test are likely "belt factories."
No Sparring / No ResistanceA school that never does live practice (sparring, rolling, randori) may not be teaching functional skills.
Aggressive CultureIf the school celebrates hurting training partners or glorifies fighting, find another school.
