Kung Fu Rank Systems
Unlike Japanese and Korean martial arts, traditional Kung Fu did not historically use a belt system. Many modern schools have adopted colored sash or belt systems for student motivation, but these vary widely by school and are not standardized.
Common sash/belt systems
WhiteBeginning student. Basic stances, first form.
YellowIntermediate beginner. Improved basics, second form.
OrangeDeveloping student. Weapon forms may begin.
GreenIntermediate. Animal forms, sparring application.
BlueAdvanced intermediate. Multiple forms, weapons proficiency.
BrownAdvanced. Teaching capability. Deep knowledge of style.
BlackMastery of the basics. 4–8 years depending on school and style.
Traditional schools may not use belts at all. In some lineage-based Kung Fu schools, there are no ranks — the instructor simply knows where each student stands. If your kid's school uses sashes or belts, that's fine, but the ranking system is the school's own, not an industry standard.
