Karate Competition Rules
Karate competition has two categories: kumite (sparring) and kata (forms). Both are judged differently.
Kumite (Sparring)

| Match length | 3 minutes (senior), 2 minutes (youth) |
| Scoring | Yuko (1 pt): punch to body/head. Waza-ari (2 pts): kick to body. Ippon (3 pts): kick to head, sweep + punch, or any scored technique on a fallen opponent. |
| Contact level | Controlled contact — techniques must be delivered with good form and controlled power. Excessive contact is penalized or results in disqualification. |
| Protective gear | Mouth guard, chest protector, shin guards, groin protector, gloves (WKF-approved). Headgear required for youth. |
| Winning | First to 8-point lead, or highest score at time. If tied, judges decide based on fighting spirit, initiative, and strategy. |
Kata (Forms)

| Format | Two competitors perform simultaneously (elimination rounds) or individually (scoring rounds) |
| Judging | Technical performance (stances, techniques, transitions, timing) and athletic performance (speed, strength, balance) |
| Kata selection | Must be from the approved list for the style. Cannot repeat the same kata in a tournament. |
| Scoring | 5.0–10.0 scale by a panel of judges. Highest and lowest scores dropped. |
WKF / Olympic rules
The World Karate Federation governs international competition. Karate was included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (both kumite and kata) but was not included in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Its Olympic future remains under discussion.
