BJJ Competition Rules

IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) rules: Matches are 5-10 minutes depending on belt level. Points are scored for: takedown (2), sweep (2), knee on belly (2), guard pass (3), mount (4), back control (4). Submissions win immediately. Advantages are used as tiebreakers. Illegal techniques vary by belt level — heel hooks, neck cranks, and some leg locks are restricted at lower belt levels. Submission-only formats (no points, win by tap only) are also popular.
