Aikido Training Format
Aikido has no sport competition. There are no tournaments, no matches, no scoring. Training is entirely cooperative — one partner attacks, the other defends, then they switch. This cooperative model is core to Aikido’s identity. Progression is measured through belt testing (demonstrations of technique) and instructor assessment, not through competitive results.
Some Aikido organizations hold demonstrations (embu) and seminars where practitioners showcase techniques, but these are not scored or competitive.
If competition is important to your kid, Aikido may not be the right fit. If personal development, calm, and cooperative practice appeal to them, Aikido is excellent.
